Weatherbug out of USA

Postby reese637 » Mon Apr 09, 2012 8:29 pm

Hello!

Let me start by saying that I really like the weather bug effect. The only issue is that I don't live in the US, and therefore do not have a ZIP code. Is there any other effect I could use? Could I possibly do something with RSS?

I could do something with Desktop+, but I don't' think I want to overcomplicate things.

Thanks for any help!

If you have a minute, check the weather bug website to see if it supports non-US weather. If so, if it's probably not too hard to hack up the effect to do what you want.

Hi Steve.
After looking over Weather Bug's site for a little while, I've determined that they do do weather outside of the US. Having said that, something like hacking-up an effect is way over my head. So, after a little more searching, I found an RSS feed with the current weather, and that seems to work pretty well.
Thanks for your suggestion!

Well in this case, hacking really means changing a URL.

What's the difference with that composition? I did a trivial glance but I didn't see what you changed.

It takes a "City Code" instead of "Zip Code", and the appropriate url has been changed. This is not meant to replace the original for us USA folks.

Thank you, FDRlive! It works nicely!

The Weatherbug website acts somewhat erratically in my Safari browser and I was unable to bring up a City Code search function on the Weatherbug site, but I found a URL that will open an XML file in a browser window with a list of Weatherbug City Codes. A desired city code should be shown amongst the cities listed. In the example URL shown below, the city name in the URL needs to be changed to the name of the desired city. In the example the city name is Montreal; the word Montreal should be changed to the name of the desired city. If the desired city has more than one word in it's name, a + sign should be added between the words; ie North+Vancouver is how the city of North Vancouver would be entered.

Here's the example URL:
Code: Select all
http://a6453888564.api.wxbug.net/getLocationsXML.aspx?SearchString=Montreal&ACode=A6453888564
